Featuring RiFF RaFF, Childish Gambino, Future and more....
June has a been a big month for hip hop releases, with names like Drake, Gucci Mane, Kanye West, Vic Mensa, and many more, releasing new singles, videos or full-length projects in thie sixth month of 2016. Not one to ease out quietly, hip hop went out of its way over the weekend to end the month of June with a bang. On the last weekend in June, here's all you might have missed in hip hop:
Riff Raff - Mercedez (ft. G-Eazy & J.Doe) Video
Riff Raff had arguably the biggest weekend of all the acts in this last, dropping this visual only a few hours before his latest album Peach Panther saw its official release. Long regarded as somewhat of a joke in music, let alone hip hop, Riff Raff came out swinging on his newest album which is, quite surprisingly, one of the more enjoyable hip hop releases for the entire year of 2016. Did I honestly just say that?
Riff Raff, and guests G-Eazy and J-Doe, offer up their best Scarface impressions in this video for one of the highlight tracks from Peach Panther. It, somehow, doesn't even matter that Riff Raff is essentially the human snakeskin boot, as the trap jam offers a wild ride sure to bless many a speaker over the months to come. Watch below.
ScHoolboy Q - By Any Means Pt. 1 Video
ScHoolboy Q is getting set to release his latest album Blank Face LP in two weeks on July 8, and took the opportunity over the weekend to drop the latest look at what fans can hope to expect from the TDE rapper's latest full-length. Eight minutes long, the By Any Means Pt. 1 visual expands on the narrative shown in Q's recent Blank Face LP album trailer and features the uncredited vocals of Kendrick Lamar between ScHoolboy Q's grimy bars and the dark, swooping beat of the track. If nothing else, the latest look further suggests that ScHoolboy Q might be about to drop one of 2016's hottest hip hop releases. Watch below.
Steve G. Lover III - No Hookahs (ft. Childish Gambino)
Steve G. Lover III borrows a beat from Tyga's Hookah, and some bars from brother Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino, for this track taken from the lesser-known Glover brother's new mixtape. Wisely letting Gambino take the bulk of the spotlight, Steve G. Lover still does more than enough to show that he has some talents all his own. Childish Gambino may, or may not, be planning a full-length release later in this year based on recent movements, but until then this guest verse is all fans have had to listen for some time from the talented MC. Listen to No Hookahs below, and find Steve G. Lover's full tape here.
Young Greatness - Celebration (ft. Akon)
Young Greatness is a name sure to be unfamiliar to many, but the New Orleans rapper recently had a viral hit single with Moolah, which even saw a remix featuring bigger names Yo Gotti and fellow New Orleans talent Lil Wayne. Now Young Greatness has returned with latest single Celebration featuring none other than Akon. It's been a few years now since Akon was one of music's biggest names, so of course you would be forgiven for not even knowing that he still made music at all, but nonetheless Akon's efforts on this track perfectly compliment those of Young Greatness. The outcome might well have a chance at being another slow-burning hit for the up and coming Young Greatness. At the very least, it makes for great, laidback listening.
DJ Esco - Project E.T. (Esco Terrestrial) [Hosted by Future] Mixtape
Fans of mega star hip hop act Future might, or rather should, recognise the name of DJ Esco, known as Future's right hand man and the inspiration behind the Freebandz label head's 56 Nights mixtape. Attracting some huge names (including Drake, Young Thug, 2 Chainz, Rae Sremmurd, Metro Boomin, among others) and numerous vocal offerings from Young Hendrix himself, DJ Esco's latest mixtape Project E.T. (Esco Terrestrial) is a mega release sure to find many plays in months to come. If Trap music had a soundtrack, this effort would likely fit the bill. Listen below and download here.
Tory Lanez - LUV Video
Building off the successful release of his second single from upcoming debut album I Told You, Tory Lanez has dropped the official video for LUV, finding the multi-talented Toronto singer/rapper utilising his best R&B chops and falling in love over a dreamy beat. Equally dreamy, the video proves perfect company to the track which could yet prove to be Tory Lanez's biggest hit. Watch below.
